Our Pastor
Pastor Bob was born and raised in a suburb of Indianapolis, Indiana. At the age of 12, he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at Lawrence Baptist Church, under the ministry of Dr. Robert Messer. As a teenager, God began dealing with Pastor Bob’s heart about his service to God, and at the age of 16 he surrendered to the call of God to preach. After graduating from high school, he attended Baptist Bible College (BBC) in Springfield, Missouri, where he became a Graduate of Theology in 1976; he later returned to BBC and graduated with a Bachelor of Pastoral Ministry degree in 1999. Pastor Bob has also been presented with an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from the Los Angeles School of Biblical Studies. Pastor Bob met his wife, Evelyn, while serving an internship at the Landmark Baptist Temple in Cincinnati, Ohio. They were married at Landmark in October 1977. They have two adult children (Rob, who lives in Tampa, Florida, and Carrie, who lives in La Porte, Indiana) and two teenage children still living at home (Erin, who is in 9th grade, and Tim, who is in 7th grade). They also have one grandchild, Georgia Rose. Pastor Bob and his family extend a warm welcome to everyone in Sumner and the surrounding area to visit the services of First Baptist Church, where you’ll hear clear and practical teaching of the Bible. We know you will be encouraged as you learn how the Word of God relates to the circumstances of your daily life.

Rev. Robert Burchfield (aka "Pastor Bob") has served as Pastor of First Baptist Church of Sumner since August 2008. Prior to coming to First Baptist Church, Pastor Burchfield pastored in NW Indiana for 9 years. He has been in pastoral ministry since 1978 and has also served churches in southern Indiana, Pennsylvania, North Dakota, and Virginia.
